Blue U. S. Navy “flat” cap worn by Beaver, Ohio native Delbert O. Overly. Mr. Overly served on the U. S. S. Asheville.
Delbert Otho Overly, aged 94, died at Pike Community Hospital on April 22, 1999. He was born June 13, 1904, in Strong Hollow north of Beaver. His parents were Oscar Orville and Mary Magnolia Moore Overly. He attended the local rural schools finishing his formal education at Fern Cliff School in Pike County. He started working as a teenager until he enlisted in the United States Navy on August 12, 1924. He served aboard the USS Huron, the USS Chaunalt, and the USS Ashville. His four-year tour of duty included stops in China, Singapore, Guam, the Hawaiian Islands, and the Philippines. Bert was discharged as a Fireman First Class on August 21, 1928. Later that same year he married Muriel Wyona Clouse, the daughter of Snowden and Ora Reisinger Clouse. Bert and Muriel were married in Columbus OH on November 17, 1928. In 1930 Bert was employed as a guard at the Ohio Penitentiary in Columbus, a job he held until his retirement in 1965. In the fall of 1942, he reenlisted in the United States Navy. He had hoped to be assigned to a ship, but with his experience as a penal officer, he was instead assigned to the military prison in Algiers LA. He served at this station until the end of the war when he was honorably discharged on October 9, 1945, with the rank of Chief Specialist. After his retirement in 1965 the couple made their home on High Street in Columbus. In 1986 they returned to Beaver. Bert and Muriel were buried in Hay Hollow Cemetery in Jackson Township.Collection
