It’s lots of fun and the time of your life. A lot of friends, studying, football games, Fridays, pop quizzes, forgetting your lunch money, and of course, those impossible tests all make up four years of good times. A new advisor, Mrs. Iris Wheeler, was named to guide staff efforts. Piketon also welcomed a new company, Jostens, to publish the book. Another new change was the addition of a journalism class to improve the appearance of the book. The staff also sold more ads, $5700, than any other staff in the school’s history. This sales effort allowed the staff to keep the book price to students at $15. The book reaped some of the effort with the addition of spot color in the theme section and a four color cover. However, our 1-9 record did not indicate the quality of our football team. We never gave up. A couple of breaks could have given us a few more wins, but we just didn’t get them. MIKE SNIVELY A first year player at running back and cornerback. Special teams player and a hard-nose competitor. Football 85 In 1985, Piketon will be participating in the first ever Senior Bowl. The game will be played at Chillicothe High School on June 15th. The game will feature players from Pike and Pickaway County against Ross County. Many of the senior Redstreaks will see action. REDSTREAK SPIKERS FINISH 3rd IN STATE!! ’IK 86 Volleyball They were the first Piketon volleyball team to reach the state tournament. They were the first team to reach district and regional tournaments. This was the first year Piketon was undefeated by Pike County teams (6-0). They were undefeated against non-league opponents (11-0). This year was also the first time the varsity and reserve teams finished with winning records. The varsity squad was 22-5, and the reserve squad was 12-6. The team finished 3rd in the state of Ohio out of 250 teams; so congratulations to Coach Cheryl Smith and the Lady Redstreaks. (1.) This year's varsity basketball team was the youngest in the SVC. Through hard work and dedication to team play, the Redstreaks improved from start to finish. The roundbailers finished fourth in the SVC and second in the sectional. Highlights of the season included extending the SVC undefeated champion Southeastern team to the limit before bowing by one point, and dumping top seeded Portsmouth East in the tournament. Rodney Nichols was selected First Team All SVC and Doug Smith got honorable mention. A super season was had by Scott Legg. The Reserve squad combined excellent defense and good shot selection to achieve a 12-8 record. The squad lost five key players to the varsity, but overcame this obstacle by realizing their roles and working hard. Their record placed them third in the Scioto Valley Conference, a good follow-up to last year’s championship team. Debbie Osborn —■ for t he past four years has been an important offensive player. Angel Current — A four year player who was a good team leader as well as an enthusiastic perform er. Kelley Butler — A transfer from Western and played here for two years. Perhaps the best defen sive player on the team. This past season’s records and statistics speak for themselves. The Piketon girl’s basketball team produced the best won-loss re cord, 13-10, in the school’s history. Their league record of 8- 8 and a fifth place finish in the S.V.C. were all indicative of this team’s heart and desire to excell. The most exciting part of the sea son was the tournament trail as the team advanced to the section al finals before losing to South eastern. The first game of the tournament was against Bishop Flaget. and highlighted the entire season as the Lady Rcdstreaks trounced the 16-3 Panthers by a score of 48-39. When the team started league play, Piketon was challenging Unioto for the S.V.C. crown. The last week of the league schedule, Piketon had to beat Unioto, Westfall, and Adena to win the S.V.C. They did, but before the Westfall game, Coach Steve Chester had bad news. Because of the eligibility problem of one of the players, Piketon had to forfeit the league games he played in. This did not stop the Redstreaks through the Tournament, winning the schools first baseball district title. In the regional tourney, Piketon beat Mt. Gilead 3-0. In the championship game against Cardington, Piketon had to fight back when they were trailing 7-0 and 8-3. In the bottom of the eighth, Scott Legg drove Phillip Day home scoring the winning run and putting Piketon in the state tournament. The 1985 edition of the boys track team was supposed to be a disappointment due to the graduation of key performers last year. This was not the case however, as the team won their third straight Pike County Meet, pulling out a thrilling 108-105 victory over Waverly. Individual accomplishments were many. Sophomore Scott Ritchie broke the school record in the 3200 Meters. Steve Shepherd led the team in scoring, and won medals at the Dogwood and Raider Invitationals, and the Pike County Meet. Even though they were small in number, they were very successful. The team captured the Sectional crown, and placed many team members into the Regional and District meets. In the Sectional Meet, Kelley Butler set an SVC record in the 400 meter dash, and was part of a record breaking two mile relay team along with Kim Smith, Carri Radabaugh, and Andrea Purpero. Kelley and Andrea capped a great year by also qualifying for the State Meet. Two other Regional qualifiers were D.D. Spencer in the low hurdles and Penny Noel in discus. These girls went all out for the boys on the teams and helped them through the hard times. Two seniors were on the squad this year, one, a second year cheerleader. Michelle Hannah, added much enthusiasm to the crowd as well as the boys on the team. The other, Collena Hamilton, has cheered all four of her high school years. Both of these girls are deeply appreciated for their support of atheletics at P.H.S. This year also set a first in P.H.S. history. Our first male cheerleader, Blain Cooper, was introduced during the basketball season. Cheerleaders 107 The Pride Of Piketon 108 Band MHfl Marching Band — This year’s marching band was very active in school functions as well as very supportive of all our athletes. They played at all of our home football games and all school sponsored pep rallies. The band gained recognition for our school at three area contest that were held at Portsmouth East, Well ston, and Miami Trace High School. They also marched in the Dogwood and the Jackson Apple- Festival Parades, where the flag corps finished third in award com petition. Concert Band — The 1984-85 Piketon High School Concert band participated in many activi ties at home and abroad. They held their annual Christmas Con cert and competed in O.M.E.A. District 16 Band Concert at Mi ami Trace High School. They also joined in with other bands to per form at the annual Pike County Music Festival, which was held here at Piketon this year. The band also played at our Gradu ation Ceremonies. We would like to thank Alan Barnard and the band for all they have done. To become SUPER-CHARGED!! 1985 was a year of growth and change. You came in the beginning with different expectations from your peers. Perhaps physics or chemistry were the classes you knew would give you an extra challenge or finally getting the lead in the Spring Musical. After their first year at PHS, the seventh grade no longer felt lost. The seniors brought in the year with easy course loads, visions of parties every weekend, and a diploma at the end of the year. Tennessee. The school's plant consultant was Gail Brown. Representing the publisher at Piketon was Rob Rainier. Consisting of 148 pages in a 7‘« x 10‘> format. The PIKETONIAN was printed on 80 |M>und white glossy enamel stock. A 150 point line screen for halftones was used Screened backgrounds, when used, resulted from 10, 30, 60 percent screenings of 100 percent black. The cover consists of 150 point binders Iswird with a white styleline base material onto which the artwork was reproduced in four color lithography. Yearbook Journalism students at Piketon High School planned, designed, and prepared all material for the 1985 PIKETONIAN yearbook. Yearbook staff members were instructed ns part of the school's elective Journalism program. Students worked on the hook during one class hour per day, in addition to frequent after school and Saturday meetings.
