Description

Charles Louis Greenbaum was born November 14, 1870, the son of Joseph and Elizabeth Barr Greenbaum. He was the seventh of a family of nine, consisting of seven sons and two daughters. Three brothers, Edward, Adolf F., and Fred, preceded him in death several years ago. He is survived by three brothers, Henry, and William of Chillicothe, and George of New Lexington, Ohio; two sisters, Mrs. Josie Land of Cincinnati and Mrs. Emma Houser of Waverly. His father died when he was a small boy and his widowed mother had a severe struggle to provide for the necessities of her large family. At an early age, while still going to school, Charles went to work for Mr. E. O. Jones of Waverly, and held disposition during most of his school days. He graduated from the Waverly schools in the year 1888 and soon afterward entered the store of Myers and Stahler, as a clerk. Upon the retirement of Mr. Myers from the firm, he became a partner of Henry Stahler, which continued until the death of Mr. Stahler. Mr. Greenbaum then purchased the store, which he conducted in the old stand for a number of years. He then purchased the large department store, known as the Emmitt store from J. Nott Hoffman and has ever since conducted a large business of various departments, patronized by a large area of our county. On October 4, 1893. He was married to Miss Lakie Wolford of Waverly, who passed to the great beyond March 14, 1913. This union was born one daughter, Mrs. Pauline McLean of Waverly, who survives him. He is also survived by one granddaughter, Miss Betty McLean. On November 21, 1922 he was married to Miss Ethel, Cox or Ross County, Ohio, who survives him. Mr. Greenbaum was active in the Civic and business affairs of our community. Honesty and uprightness were his watchwords, and he was known as a man strictly honorable and all his dealings. He was looked upon as a leader in the business world and a superior knowledge of values and recognized merit and worth wherever he met them. he was a member of the athletic club of Columbus Ohio; of the country club of Chillicothe, Ohio; of the Exchange Club of Waverly, Ohio; and also vice president of the First National Bank of Waverly, Ohio
