An Oasis in the Badlands

The photographic print depicts a scene of a single Native American man on horseback in the Badlands of South Dakota. The horseman in Red Mark, a sub-chief of the Ogallala Sioux. Red Mark is in and Leggings. He is shown in profile (facing to the right) mounted on a white horse. The horse is drinking from a waterhole or stream in a grassy field/plain, with a backdrop of distant badland bluffs. Possible identification of method/type of this print may be that of an ambrotype (as it is the positive image on a glass support). *Ambrotype - positive, physically developed silver image in collodion (transparent, viscous fluid) binder on an opague, non-reflective support. The lightest parts of the image have the most silver; the darkest areas have none, and reveal only the dark, non-reflective support. Their images appear negative when examined by light transmitted through the glass support.
