Plains Art Museum

Saddle blanket is H-shaped, having embroidered borders in lazy-stitched beadwork (twelve rows) onto leather. Two main design element groupings repeat and alternate throughout the two symmetrical sides on a white background. Beginning at the bottom four corners/tabs is the first design with includes: a pair of inverted triangles (half green and half red; blue and brass bead accents); and two pairs of inverted arrow, bar, and prong motifs (deep blue, brass, red). The second design included: crossed lines with double "flags" (triangles) at each of the four ends (deep blue, brass); and two diverging, diagonal borders/lines of stepped triangles (red; also forming two opposing, larger triangles). Blanket center is plain leather; long leather fringe (10" maximum length) decorates each of the four bottom corners/tabs. On the bottom edge of one tab, two original brass trade bells remain attached (to the top edge of the fringe).
