Chiron Erupting

Name/Title

Chiron Erupting

Description

Chiron was discovered in 1977 as the then most-distant known “asteroid.” In 1988, Dave Tholen, Dale Cruikshank, and Bill observed the first known brightness outburst of Chiron at Mauna Kea Observatory, revealing its cometary nature. This painting shows such activity as it passes Saturn.
