The viewer stands on a planetesimal, an asteroid-like body that grew from dust particles during the formation of the Sun. Another planetesimal is passing in front of the Sun. These bodies grew into planets as they collided and stuck together, and the leftovers are what we call asteroids (rocks) and comets (ice-rich) today.
