Meteor shower on Mars as Siding Spring Comet Passed by Mars
Description
Comet Siding Spring broke up in the atmosphere as it passed Mars on Oct. 19, 2014, creating a luminescent shower in the pre-dawn hours. The depiction is based on reports by astronomer Nick Schneider and work on cometary meteors by Olga Popova. The image integrates soil from Tucson to create visible gravel-like textures on the surface of Mars.
