A portrait of Beatrice Cencie- A young woman peering over her left shoulder with a sorrowfull/heavy expression, dressed in white with a white headwrap, hair falling out slightly. On a dark background in an ornately carved gold gilt frame. Beatrice Cenci, the portrait subject, was a member of a patrician Roman family who, with the help of relatives, was responsible for the murder of her father who was known for his domestic violence & cruelty. She was tried in 1599 and sentenced to death by the Pope. Beatrice became of great interest especially in the 19th Century as a romantic heroine & was the subject of many written works including Shelley's poem The Cenci, a reason why so many copies of the original painting have been madeCollection
