General Notes

Note

Other: Original to Coe Hall Notes: Portrait can be seen in historic Hewitt photos of Planting Fields, and in photos on Cherokee Plantation. Painting must have been moved to various locations at various times. At one point was hanging over fireplace in entrance hall. Possibly traveled with the Coes. Note: Joyce inherited painting from estate of Caroline Graham Coe. Re: Appraisal 11.23.2008, Joanna Badami Derivation of Evaluation All of the appraised works, with the exception of # 9, are portraits of persons closely connected to Coe Hall - Planting Fields, or closely connected to William Robertson Coe, the builder-founder of Coe Hall - Planting Fields. Specifically due to this connection, their valuations have been increased above their basic replacement valuations, which would have been used if the works of art had not been associated directly with Coe Hall - Planting Fields. Several of the artists, Frank Salisbury and J.J.Shannon, have exceptional auction listingd as Portraitists, especially when painting well-known figurera or local gentry. frank Salisbury achieved his highest prices for his portraits of Winston Churchill. J.J.Shannon achieved his highest prices when painting portraits of glamorous members of society in England, especially wghen depicted in an evocative setting with meticulous detail. There were no known listings for J.A. Murray or D. Anthony Tanszky. These portraits were valued based on the quality of the painting, including subject, and overall composition. Status: OK
