Description

Frame for the portrait of Lomellini. It is nearly identical to the frame for the Countess Lomellini. Constructed of mitered and profiled front molding attached to a lap joint backing frame which creates the rabbet. The frame has a flat insert with an arched top and ogee profiled lower corners. The molding has a deep outer cove and a wide frieze on the inside. The frieze is decorated with scraffito foliate design, which is continued on the spandrels of the insert. Remainder of frame is gold leaf. A picture of the frame can be seen in record 1955.002.112.

In 1996 Eric Price noted the frame has a grime layer, the gesso is lifting extensively on front edge, but appears worst at left side center, the wood frame backing is separating from the front molding on the left side. The painted was varnished in the frame, and some gesso losses are overpainted.
