Oil painting "Speaker Lenthall and Family". A large, life size portrait of the Lenthall family - Lenthall is seated at left, with dog on his lap, wearing black clothing with large white collar and cuffs. His wife sits at right, in an elegant blue and silver off the shoulder satin gown, holding an infant on her right knee. She looks to her right toward Lenthall. Standing between them is a daughter in a pale gown, apron, and white cap, holding a rose and looking up at the infant, and a son to the left, standing at his father's side with his arms around the pet dog.

Note

Notes: James Stourton from Sotheby's noted to George Wachter that the composition was based on an early Van Dyck "so-called 'Great Piece' of Charles I and his family at Buckingham Palace." He believes the painting was done between 1641-49 when Weesop was in England, and he is almost sure the painting is mentioned in George Vertue's notebooks (Vertue Vol II p. 4,62. Bol IV p. 106,180) - notebooks at the time in the collection of Sir John Burford of Burford priory. (do not have date of this memo) Status: OK
