A bust of John Welsley (1703-1791) was a prominent English cleric and theologian who founded Methodism along with his brother George Whitefield. He was also ordained as an Anglican priest, which relates to the Coe's religious faith.
The bust is part of a pair with a second bust (P2014.000.230) also on display in Mr. Coe's bedroom atop the second bookcase.
