William and Mary style oyster-veneered walnut and string-inlaid chest of drawers, having concentric circle string inlaid top with straight, molded edge, over two short drawers, over three long graduated drawers. The drawers, top and sides cross-banded with walnut, with deep molded edge base, supported on four ball feet, engraved, batwing, bail-handle, staple-back brasses, and the wood darkly patinated, overall warm color.Collection

Description: Badami added that on 4/21/1995 a comparable "oyster-veneered" walnut chest sold for $11,500 at Sotheby's. She appraised Coe Hall's for more, because a) the overall patination of the wood is richer, b) the market in this type of veneered furniture has increased since said sale in 4/1995, c) there is significance in the provenance of the Appraised belonging at one time to the Coe family's furnishings.Provenance

"Oyster-veneered" wood is wood cut transversely, from the small branches of the walnut, olive, laburnum or kingwood tree, then pieces together to over the desired surface.
