A mid-late 17th Century carved oak "cassapanca", or lift top chest, possibly French or Flemish, having a straight-edged top with two planked lift lids, each with staple or snipe hinges, raised structure at each end, incorporating arm rest and small lift-lid storage compartment possibly for candles, these upper side-structures, with lunette carved design, continuing to side stiles, the stiles centered by a five-paneled front, each panel with carved peasant figures, four panels with single male or female peasant, the central panel with man and woman holding hands, centered by a tree - Possibly representing the "Tree of Life" or the "Family Tree" (this would probably make it a dowry chest). The front is further trimmed with lunette carved upper and lower molding, the sides and back also paneled, however, with no carved decoration.Collection
