An ornately carved oak coffer, mid-19th Century, in Gothic style, probably English, having deeply molded straight edge top, centered by carved putti head and flowers, with foliate surround, over the casket body, with densely carved scenes on the front and sides of the box, depicting the "Angel's Annunciation to Mary", the "Visitation of Mary to her Cousin Elizabeth", the "Nativity", and the "Appearance of Michael, the Archangel, to Jacob." The back has a pair of winged cherub heads, and the whole done with deeply outset foliate-carved base molding, set on four flattened ball feet. Box is diplayed locked, Collections Department holds key.

Box was dripped on. Major rain storm on 9/29/2023, leaks throughout Coe Hall. Entire box did not get wet, mostly just the carved face on the very top of the lid. Box air dried and is not stained.Overall Condition
