Description

Rare Castelli tin-glazed Renaissance earthenware spouted wet drug jar, "Orsini-Colonna" type, having a dragon head and neck spout, applied side handle, finely decorated with two profile bust-portraits, facing each other on either side of the spout, showing the portrait of two young men, with Gothic print below it in Latin, which translates to "Syrup of Byzantium". Original furnishings of Coe Hall. Acquired c. 1923 from the collection of Claude Lafontaine of Paris for 420 pounds sterling. Then passed to Natalie Coe Vitetti c. 1958, and then to Michael Coe.
