Floor-to-ceiling carved fireplace mantel. This fireplace was installed after the Coes experimented with several others in the same location. Charles' clients often experimented with architectural objects or pieces of furniture for several months, returning them in exchange for something else if not satisfied. This soapstone mantelpiece is composed of two distinct parts: the upper section was made in Bristol, England in the 16th century while the earlier lower section was made in Italy. This is an example of how antiques were used with a greater eye towards decorative effect than authenticity.
