Description

Weathervane from the turret of Columbia School, also known as 1st Ward School.

Use

Usually placed at the highest architectural point of a building and featuring an arrow, a weathervane indicates the direction of the wind. While many weathervanes are strictly decorative, this one is hollow and made of lightweight tin, suggesting it was also functional.

Context

Columbia School was designed by architect Charles Lembke and built in 1892. Due to high upkeep expenses, the building was abandoned in 1964 and razed in 1965. The weathervane was not found in the wreckage, so Curator Genevieve Bundy urged that whoever rescued it donate it to the museum.
