Description

Album of cartes-de-visite - small photographs of portraits or landscapes.

Use

Cartes-de-visite grew in popularity as a genre of photography during the second half of the nineteenth century. Cartes offered consumers a relatively cheap alternative to photographic portraits of loved ones or famous figures.

Context

Rose Howe purchased these cartes at photography shops in Innsbruck, Augsburg, and Strasbourg and later assembled them into this album as a souvenir of the family’s trip abroad. These cartes showcase the area’s notable landscapes and buildings and its locals in traditional garb.
