Context

Harry Danning spent his entire professional baseball career with the New York Giants, playing as a catcher from 1933-1942. Known as an exceptional hitter and defensive catcher, “Harry the Horse” was regarded by many, including Babe Ruth, as “the best catcher in the world.” He was a four-time All-Star and was inducted into the Jewish-American Sports Hall of Fame. In 1943, Danning was drafted into the U.S. Army and later discharged due to arthritis, ending his baseball career. He and his wife, Diane, lived in Chesterton until her death in 1978, and Danning moved to Valparaiso in 1980 to be near his daughter.
