Use
The small holes in this lantern do more than just cast intricate shadows. Punched into the tin sides with the tip of a nail, the holes served a practical function, allowing air to reach the flame while still sheltering it from gusts of wind. Additionally, the enclosure helped prevent the fire from spreading if the lantern tips over. These features allowed the lantern to be used outdoors and to transport a lit candle without extinguishing its flame.
