Name/Title

Joseph Bailly's Trunk

Entry/Object ID

2015.42.1

Description

Trunk owned and used by fur trader Joseph Bailly, the first white settler in Porter County. Constructed of wood, the trunk is especially notable for being lined with sheets from a London newspaper dated 1784 and for being wrapped in deerskin. Hinges were hand-wrought. Latch has become loose but would have been attached with small, handmade iron nails.

Use

Trunks would have been used to carry personal items, or perhaps items used for trade, from place to place.
