Scope and Content

Joseph Bailly's accounting "daybook," or "journal" in French. The book, handwritten entirely in French, is 88 pages long and lists what Joseph Bailly bought and sold between February 1799 and May 1802 as a fur trader at Fort Michilimackinac in northern Michigan.

Context

The journal tells us where Joseph traveled, what he traded, and its value. It mentions items that were directly exchanged, articles to outfit his employees, everyday household items, and, of course, fur pelts.
