An Era Ends - And the walls came tumbling down...that's the theme here as historic First Methodist Church in Valpa- raiso surrenders to wreckers. The church at Franklin and Jefferson was built in 1888. It will be replaced by a new structure at the same location. (Post-Tribune photo.)

There was many a moist eye in Valparaiso last week as the First Methodist Church yielded to the demolition crew and became only a memory. There is a peculiar beauty about an old church that has nothing to do with the brick and mortar that holds together the structure - it is, perhaps, a beauty of holiness. Each passing person has a different memory picture - an Easter Sunday, a christening or a wedding. Soon a new church will rise and new memory pictures will be formed.
