Ring carved from the root of an apple tree.Context
According to our records, this ring was carved from the root of an apple tree by Alpheus Chandler French while he was serving in the Civil War. French was part of Company I of the 20th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment that organized on July 22, 1861. He was killed in battle in May 1864. His younger brother, Solon, a veteran who survived the war, perhaps brought this ring home with him.Acquisition
