The Story of a French Homestead in the Old Northwest

Name/Title

The Story of a French Homestead in the Old Northwest

Entry/Object ID

1900.325.3

Description

Spiral-bound book telling the story of the Bailly family.

Context

Written by accomplished author Frances Rose Howe who used this opportunity to frame her family's story in her own way. Frances insisted the book told the “true story” of her family, but it is largely a work of historical fiction and mythmaking that catered to the romantic appeal of frontier life in American culture at the time. The work has been an obstacle to generations of Bailly researchers, many of whom have treated it as a central source.
