Label: Signed and dated, this portrait was executed in Portsmouth and presumably depicts a local gentleman, unidentified to date. Nelle Mathes Horne studied under Ulysses D. Tenney (1866-1907) and became a well-known artist., especially for her portraits of children. She also painted many local dignitaries, including ten of Portsmouth's mayors; those portraits are in the collection of City Hall.Type of Painting
