Name/Title

Thirzah Hazzard (1810-1900), drawing, Springfield, 1820-30

Entry/Object ID

Description

White cotton cloth with inkwork drawing of two bird nests and a stick. Above drawing in ink: "Thirzah Hazzard." Below drawing in ink: "Springfield." Like samplers, ink work on cloth was a part of a young women's education during the early nineteenth century. This a particularly rare and good example of the work. There is an adhesive label with red border in ink: "P.H.S. Mrs. D. W. Adams." Thirzah Hazzard first married in 1834, suggesting this was worked prior to that time.
