Name/Title
Pair of mittens, probably Portsmouth area, 1800-1810Entry/Object ID
776Description
Pair of Colonial shag mittens, white with pink trim. Mittens were knit and then loops of yarn were woven in the knit to create the shag look (hand-hooked). In the diary of Ruth Henshaw Bascom it is noted that mittens of this type were made in 1801 and were “in new style.” There are several such mittens in the collection of Old Sturbridge Village, however they are quite rare.Collection
