Description

Pink hat, Lily Beyer, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, 2017. Arranmore yarn; H. 8 in., W. 10 1/4 in. Artist's statement: "This hat was made by Lily Beyer, a local knitter and engineer. Lily has been a knitter for 20 years, and has extensive experience with knitting a variety of garments and accessories. It is made of Arranmore yarn from the Fiber Company in colorway Slieve Sunset, purchased at Spinning Yarns in Dover, NH. It was knitted in the round with a garter stitch hem and stockinet stitch body, and bound off at the crown with a three needle bind off. Additional stitching was added to form the ears. Lily wore the hat at the Women's March in Washington, DC, which she attended with her family."

Context

Following the inauguration of the 45th President, Donald Trump, a worldwide protest was held. The goal was to, according the organizers, to "send a bold message to our new administration on their first day in office, and to the world that women's rights are human rights." The march in the capitol had 470,000 participants and an estimated 6,000,000 more around the United States.
