Description
Lithographic print of a Portsmouth Harbor, designed by William Brotherhead, and produced by H.J. Toudy and Co. in 1876. Print is celebrating the centennial of the country, part of a series of 13 prints, each showing a city from one of the original 13 states and the state seal.
The center shield-shaped scene of the print shows a winter view of the harbor, complete with skating children and horse-pulled sleighs. Vignettes on either side of the top of the shield allude to Portsmouth's dual industries of shipping and agriculture. Below the shield, there is a scene of marble carving, with two symbolic oversized busts, labeled Whipple and Bartlett, standing on either side. Both men were New Hampshire residents, made famous for signing the Declaration of Independence as part of the state's delegation to the Continental Congress.
