Description

Printed silk memorial to John Badger. The image is of a women near the grave site with an urn on top of the tomb and a weeping willow in the background.

Context

The willow symbolizes not only sorrow, but immortality as well as its association with the gospel of Christ. Much like the tree, no matter how many branches are cut off, the willow will continue to flourish. Urns represented death itself, reminding mourners of the passages from Genesis 3:19; “In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.”
