Scrimshaw turtle, with small head, four legs, and tail, housed in a rectangular box with a sliding lid and a red deck with green vegetation; the turtle's eyes are black and the shell has nineteen black spots in a regularly spaced pattern.Context
Purchased by the donor on eBay in June 2004 from Chris and Jennifer Daltry; dealer indicated that it had connections with the Simes, Osgood, Lewis, and Walker families of Portsmouth and Salem, Mass. There are several Simes family members with seafaring connections who are potential candidates for the maker, but the evidence is inconclusive pending further research.Acquisition
