Harlow's view of the "Estate of Col. Nathaniel Meserve, Mill St., Portsmouth, 1740" depicts the elaborate house and garden built by Meserve, a shipbuilder. It was later owned by Peter Livius and his wife in 1764, and then by Col. George Boyd, a British officer. Both Livius and Boyd were Loyalists in the Revolution. The house survived until the twentieth century but no longer stands.Type of Painting
