No Familiar Hand Tempered the Austerity of His Self-made...Entry/Object ID
823.Ph86Description
With his arms folded across his bent knees, a nude male sits upon a bare mattress on the floor. With anguish in his gaze, the man stares downward. "No Familiar Hand Tempered the Austerity of His Self-made Brooklyn Cell" presents the isolation of vanishing from society. In search of freedom, one succumbs to feelings of otherness.
In creating his own environment, the subject took control. However, this sense of stability brought on by control comes at a price. Solitude. When unable to handle social pressures, instead of utilizing a mask and hiding within society, they chose to hide from it. This begs the question, how can one escape without isolating oneself?
By finding community, that paradox resolves itself. The rules and standards that drove individuals to hide behind masks and closed doors vanish.Artwork Details
