Description

Standing tall, beyond the traffic of the harbor, resides a beacon of freedom visible across Cape Cod Bay, the Pilgrim Monument. Although built to commemorate and honor the Mayflower Pilgrims, the “New World,” and the signing of the Mayflower Compact, the iconography of the Pilgrim Monument has become much more. It is the landmark of a community continuously ahead of the nation, the sociopolitical avant-garde. It is a pushpin on the map of the United States, exclaiming that the acceptance and equality fought for elsewhere exists right here. It is possible. It is felt in the costumes during carnival, in the performances of Varla Jean, and in the authenticity and care of its community. Like a radio tower hidden among the dunes, the Pilgrim Monument emits a signal of love and authenticity. Let the masks slip away.
