"Lawrence Beall Smith, painter, sculptor and lithographer, was born in Washington, D. C. in 1902. Educated at the Art Institute of Chicago, the University of Chicago and in Glouchester and Boston. He is best remembered as a book illustrator. Among the volumes he illustrated are Robin Hood, Ogden Nash’s - Girls Are Silly, Henry Fielding’s - Tom Jones, Henry James’ - Washington Square, and Edith Wharton’s Age of Innocence. His work has been exhibited at the Carnegie Institute, Whitney Museum, the Library of Congress and the Metropolitan Museum, Beall Smith realistically captures the everyday activities of his fellow man."
