Description

A seascape at dusk/night is illuminated by the moon peeking through parted clouds. A steamboat on the water is sailing, releasing a puff of smoke (middle-left) on the horizon line. A mountain range on the right separated the water from the sky on the horizon line. The texture created from the use of oil paint creates movement and a sheen to the piece. The piece is colored with very muted and neutral colors (dark blues, creams, grays and black. The piece looks as though it has some kind of yellow/green varnish making the piece look extra glossy. The piece is heavily contrasted through the use of shadows and light being created by the moon. The artist breaks up the dark ocean with rays from the moon, which in turn illuminates the other secondary figures in the seascape. Balance is created through the use of color and the contrast between the shadows and light in the piece. The texture from the waves and the fluffiness/smoothness of the clouds creates the feeling of stillness and dynamic movement in the waves creating a balanced image.

"Nels (Neils Johan) Hagerup was born in Christiana Norway into a family that included the composer Edvard Hagerup Grieg. After studying art in Christiana, Berlin and Copenhagen he served as a merchant seaman, eventually landing on the west coast of the United States in 1882. He taught art for several years in Portland, Oregon before moving to San Francisco in 1892. This painting is very likely of the seaward view from San Francisco near the present day south terminus of the Golden Gate bridge. "
