On the left is the Entry into Jerusalem, showing Christ riding an ass toward the city in the company of his disciples. Young children lay cloths on the ground for the ass and its rider to step on. Christ turns back toward his followers and gives them a sign of benediction. On the right is the Raising of Lazarus, which was Jesus’ last miracle before his Crucifixion and which foreshadows his own return from the dead. Christ gestures toward Lazarus as Martha and Mary (sisters of the deceased) and the apostles look on. Both scenes refer to feast days in the Orthodox calendar.
