Nakagawa Hachirō 中川八郎 (1877–1922)
House by the Brook, 1902
Ink on paper watercolor
1997.14.04
Like Hiroshi Yoshida, Nakagawa Hachirō was trained in Western style painting, called yōga. He was principally a watercolorist, depicting landscapes. In 1899 he traveled abroad to see the US and Europe with Hiroshi Yoshida, taking painted canvases to sell as a way to fund their journey. This work was painted in 1902, the year he returned to Japan and co-founded the Taiheiyo Gakkai, an art school focused on Western style painting.
The influence of impressionism can be seen in the soft lines, broken brushwork, and diffuse light found in this work. This work is an excellent example of Nakagawa Hachirō’s style and mastery of his medium.
