"Born in Juchitan, Mexico, Toledo’s only formal training consisted of a short period of study at the Graphic Workshop in Mexico City in 1958 and with Stanley Hayter in Paris in 1960. Toledo held his first solo exhibitions in Mexico City and Fort Worth, Texas in 1959. From 1960 to 1966 he traveled to Europe and continued exhibiting his work for which he received many awards. Toledo exhibited in 1974 and 1975 at the Martha Jackson Gallery in New York, and recently at the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo in Monterey as well as the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City in the 1992 traveling exhibition, El hichizo de Oaxaca. Toldeo currently lives and works in Oaxaca. His surrealist work has been compared to that of Andre Masson but seems unconnected to either European Surrealism or to Mexican fantasy.

"Francisco Toledo lived and studied in Europe before returning to his native Oaxaca, Mexico where he created the Instituto de Artes Graficas de Oaxaca (IAGO). Toledo's creativity has been expressed in pottery, sculpture, weaving, graphic arts, and paintings. An epic myth seems to play out here – a man carrying a fish with a woman’s appendages through a hostile looking circle of birds, while walking on the backs of turtles."
