Bernhard Vogel (1683-1737), German after Frans van Stampart (1675-1750), Flemish Johann Kenckel, ca. 1722 Ink on paper mezzotint 2021.05.13 This is a portrait of the German painter and printmaker Johann Kenckel (1688-1722) likely produced as a memorial shortly after his death. At first glance it looks like an oval painting set inside an architectural niche, but the artist has added a flowing cloak that breaks the picture plane, playing with 2D and 3D. The plaque on the oval reads: “Johannes Kenckel, the Great. An eminent Painter and Sculptor from Nuremberg, born Feb. 14, 1688, son-in-law of Christopher Weigel died March 15, 1718, he died peacefully and peacefully. 20 Dec. 1722.” This work is a mezzotint, an intaglio process like engraving or etching, it produces rich, velvety tones seen here.
