"The transformational portraits of Robert Lostutter take us to a world that is surreal, mysterious, and exotic. Here, reality is hidden behind a mask of brilliant plumage. Lostutter's style is representative of work produced in Chicago during the last half of the twentieth century. While abstraction reigned on the coasts, artists in the center of the country continued to produced images of recognizable objects, looking for new symbols and means of expression. This creature’s feathered face gazes at the viewer inquisitively, almost with a sense of mischief, or a promise of intrigue."
