The Roman Emperor Constantine legalized the Christian religion in the 4th century after seeing a cross in a dream before the Battle of the Milvian Bridge, in which he defeated his enemy. He had a cross made and carried it into the fight, defeating the enemy. He also moved the capital of the Roman Empire to Constantinople. The Empress Helena, Constantine’s mother, was a devout Christian, who traveled to the Holy Land to find the True Cross and built many churches there. Both individuals are associated with the beginnings of Christianity as a state religion. Here the two figures support a large plain cross between them, and Helena gestures toward it. Both are richly draped and crowned, and have elaborate halos. The landscape is indicated by a few leaves at their feet and the sky by a few clouds, as the two figures and the Cross fill the frame. The riza has a raised border with a foliate pattern.
