Cultural/Historical Context

"In Japanese culture, the Koi represent long life and vigor. Koi are as long lived as humans and are very hardy. They have been kept as pets for more than 800 years. Bakusen Tsuchida was born into a wealthy and influential family in the Niigata Prefecture. Tsuchida found his own personal style based on traditional Japanese painting and printmaking. His subjects remained the Japanese tradition- women portraits, flower still lifes and genre scenes. "
