This is one part of a two-panel scene depicting the Annunciation, in which the Archangel Gabriel informs the Virgin that she will bear the future son of God. Standing in an interior setting, the Virgin has been practicing her devotions, as an open book on a nearby table indicates along with her raised hands. The tall, slender woman is framed by a columned doorway from which a curtain hangs, and she appears in nearly the same scale as the surrounding, refined architecture. The form of the Virgin’s drapery compares with other images of her (see 2005.02.016). This icon and the now-missing companion piece probably were shown together on an iconostasis.
