Alexander Browne (ca. 1630-1706), British after Jacob Huysmans (1633-1697), Anglo-Flemish His Royal Highness Prince George of Denmark, 1680-1700 Ink on paper mezzotint 2021.05.06 This portrait is of Prince George of Denmark (1653-1708), husband of Queen Anne (1665-1714) who along with her sister Queen Mary (1662-1694) overthrew their Catholic father James II (1633-1701) in the Glorious Revolution. He was therefore cousin-in-law by marriage to the Duchess of Monmouth, included in this exhibition. Here George is shown with the armor of a medieval knight including plumed helmet. To his right a pitched battle rages, no doubt referencing the defeat of King James and the restoration of a Protestant monarch. Because engravings would often be reissued, this work was printed around 1793, almost 100 years after the plate was first created. We can identify that based on the publishing house Bowles and Carver which was not established until the end of the 18th century.
