Untitled Landscape
Eleanor Brockenbrough (1880 – 1938)
Oil on Canvas
Eleanor Brockenbrough’s work is a traditional representation of landscape painting compared to the neighboring works. Impressionist-inspired, Brockenbrogh uses soft brushstrokes and small daubs of pure color to unite the foreground and background and render the expansive view. Here, bright yellows, oranges, and pinks bring light to the leaves of trees, while blue and violet shadows are cast below.
Born in Lafayette, IN, Brockenbrough studied painting at the Art Institute of Chicago and continued her studies in Massachusetts. Upon her return to Indiana, Brockenbrough began exhibiting her works. Throughout her career, she also participated in local art groups such as the North Shore Arts Association, Indiana Artists Club and Hoosier Salon Patrons. In 1929, Brokenbrough was elected the first woman president of the Lafayette Art Association.
