Wave of Change Judy Youngblood Linocut, 1994 The paintings and prints of Judy Youngblood are laden with a rich visual symbolism that takes their inspiration from the extreme weather patterns of her native Texas. The underlying framework in her work is the paradoxical human desire for both stability and change. The ever-present surging waves and shifting weather patterns stand in for the constantly changing emotional experiences of people, and reflect the ever evolving state of the human condition. The figures or silhouettes in her work are often engulfed by waves or downpours, sometimes dangling over the roiling surf or simply watching nature’s tumult unfold. Her multi-layered and complex works are open to interpretation, providing the viewer with universal, yet ambiguous symbols. Judy Youngblood is a professor emeritus of art at the University of Norther Texas Denton where she has taught printmaking and book art for over twenty years.
